Freeze Casting

Temporarily frozen sculptural paintings, acrylic on fabric, dimensions variable (approximately 10x15’ each).

Inspired by the drawing idea of a volumetric gestural sketch, fleeting sculptural forms are created by freezing painted fabric while wrapped around elements in the landscape. As the forms are casted by the land, the abstracted gestural forms painted on the surface, which reference previous instances of the project, are recomposed into new visual arrangements. These fragile sculptural paintings are then removed from their original context and photographed to document them before they collapse. Their temporary nature and precarious sense of balance are meant to mirror the shared nature of the landscape which I am striving to heighten.

I have been interested in conducting this project on ceded Anishinaabe lands where this gesture of disappearance takes on greater conceptual meaning.
