images from recent photographic manipulations investigating various processes to lift the emulsion in order to decay and transform them by rearranging their elements organically. during the process of exploring the techniques, cody yantis asked me to work on artwork for a collaborative 7″ lathe cut and dvd release. in turn, the above images originated from stills in the dvd which were then manipulated and rephotographed.

spring 2014 course offerings

drawing possibilities 02

i’ll be teaching two courses that are open to the public this spring at the minneapolis college of art and design through continuing education, one of which is an original exploratory drawing course i have developed titled drawing possibilities. registration opens on 1/6/14 and there is an early registration discount before 1/20/14. Scholarships that cover 97% of the cost of class are available at http://mcad.edu/continuing-education/scholarships.

drawing possibilities

This course is designed to explore varied perspectives on the act of drawing including experimental approaches to mark-making, material explorations, idea generation, and layering complex pictorial combinations. Class time will be shared between lectures, demonstrations, individual investigation time, and collaborative efforts. Drawing Possibilities is designed to be complementary to last year’s experimental drawing class Drawing as Process. There are no prerequisites, so anyone is welcome who is interested in expanding their definitions of what drawing can be, as well as finding new insight into ideas for their own creative work.

botanical drawing

This class provides an introduction to the splendor of historical and contemporary botanical drawing. Students will use a variety of media such as graphite, colored pencils, and watercolor to create their own series of illustrations. This class will also address the basic techniques used to capture both the detail and the beautiful and mysterious qualities of the botanical world. Class sessions will include presentations, demonstrations, and on-location drawing at the Como Conservatory in Saint Paul.

in anticipation of the release “call, response,” a collaborative album by artists david andree and josh mason, this video piece was made with a dual-frame structure mirroring the working process of the album. each artist created their own sequence to be played back simultaneously to compliment an excerpt of a piece from the album titled “a beacon, peace and a steambath.”

on the right: david andree shot his material along the mississippi river in minnesota, returning to the same location where he shot the album’s cover art photograph.

on the left: josh mason shot his material in various locations in florida.

returned to the location where i took the photograph that is featured on the upcoming album call, response. the original photography was shot during a flood before any of the actual recording of the album began. it was kind of fitting now that the album is resolved to revisit the location and find the river level at its other extreme.

call, response

i am pleased to announce that call, response, a collaborative album containing musical conversations between myself and artist josh mason (jacksonville, fl), will be published as a 12″ vinyl lp in early 2014 by own records (luxembourg).

Call, Response was conceived of as a long distance musical conversation between the two artists. A single take of material performed by one artist was recorded to magnetic tape and sent to the other with the restriction that accompaniment be recorded in real time as well, closely simulating a live performance. Over time, as the players learned more about each other and their methods, an overarching quality to the body of work developed from their shared sensibilities. The call and response format allowed the voice of each artist to be present, interacting and intersecting, within a murky atmosphere punctuated by melodic fragments and moments of clarity.
